30 Day Book Challenge // 26

Book that makes you laugh out loud.

Hyperbole and a Half by Allie BroshI was given this book for Christmas last year. However 3 weeks before that I had had major abdominal surgery. I’m not sure if you’ve ever had a laparotomy but trust me when I say laughing is not fun if you are recovering from a surgeon cutting a hole in your stomach muscles.

Fortunately this book is very short. I finished it in about 3 hours. One problem I did have however is most of the book has been copied from the Hyperbole and a Half blog and in my opinion the extra content you get with the book does not make buying the book worthwhile.

This book is very funny. Just don’t read it if you’ve recently had surgery as you’re gonna have a bad time.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I seriously laugh until I cry at her stuff. It’s so good. And on top of that her comics explaining what depression really is and feels like are so accurate and perfect while still keeping a sense of humor about it.

  2. Thanks for relating the story of when you read it, Emma. Yes, I can understand that the timing was not good. Glad you provided the link to the blog; I’ll have to go check it out.

One of the first books which made me laugh out loud was Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K. Jerome. It was published in the late 19th Century, so I don’t know if it would make someone who reads mainly contemporary novels laugh as much. It’s rather a gentle humor than a biting, sarcastic wit. It’s free at Project Gutenberg in numerous formats. The eBook is at http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/308 and there are also two audio versions, one with multiple readers and one which appears to be a single reader. The book number of 308 indicates that someone loved it enough to produce it in the very early days of PG.

  3. This made me smile, as I had surgery too in November, removal of my Gallbladder. Shortly afterwards I choked on a cup of tea and couldn’t stop coughing which wasn’t a good idea either!
