5 Books I’m Pre-Ordering

My Amazon cart is currently full of books I want to pre-order so I thought I would share some of the ones I’m most excited about. However I won’t be talking about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in this post because if you were a true Potter fan you would have had that book ordered the day it was announced (I know I sure did!).

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel

I keep coming across this on Netgalley but I’ve never been able to request it because it’s for US readers only. Also I really like the cover.

A girl sneaks out just before dark to ride her new bike. Suddenly, the ground disappears beneath her. Waking up at the bottom of a deep pit, she sees an emergency rescue team above her. The people looking down see something far stranger…

“We always look forward. We never look back.”

That girl grows up to be Dr. Rose Franklyn, a brilliant scientist and the leading world expert on what she discovered. An enormous, ornate hand made of an exceptionally rare metal, which predates all human civilisation on the continent.

“But this thing … it’s different. It challenges us. It rewrites history.”

An object whose origins and purpose are perhaps the greatest mystery humanity has ever faced. Solving the secret of where it came from – and how many more parts may be out there – could change life as we know it.

“It dares us to question what we know about ourselves.”

But what if we were meant to find it? And what happens when this vast, global puzzle is complete…?

“About everything.”

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

This is another book I came across on Netgalley. It sounds really intriguing, especially the whole podcast thing.

Frances has always been a study machine with one goal, elite university. Nothing will stand in her way; not friends, not a guilty secret – not even the person she is on the inside.

But when Frances meets Aled, the shy genius behind her favourite podcast, she discovers a new freedom. He unlocks the door to Real Frances and for the first time she experiences true friendship, unafraid to be herself. Then the podcast goes viral and the fragile trust between them is broken.

Caught between who she was and who she longs to be, Frances’ dreams come crashing down. Suffocating with guilt, she knows that she has to confront her past…
She has to confess why Carys disappeared…

The Orion Plan: A Thriller by Mark Alpert

This is one I came across in an email from Forbidden Planet, it’s sci-fi and it looks interesting.

Scientists thought that Earth was safe from invasion. The distance between stars is so great that it seemed impossible for even the most advanced civilizations to send a large spaceship from one star system to another. But now an alien species from a planet hundreds of light-years from Earth has found a way. A small spherical probe lands in an empty corner of New York City. It soon drills into the ground underneath, drawing electricity from the power lines to jump-start its automated expansion and prepare for alien colonization.

When the government proves slow to react, NASA scientist Dr. Sarah Pooley realizes she must lead the effort to stop the probe before it becomes too powerful. Meanwhile, the first people who encounter the alien device are discovering just how insidious this interstellar intruder can be.

Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship With A Remarkable Man by William Shatner

I’ve always been a fan of William Shatner’s books though William Shatner doesn’t actually “write” his books. Anyway it’s about Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek so I have to have it.

Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner first crossed paths as actors on the set of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Little did they know that their next roles, in a new science-fiction television series called Star Trek, would shape their lives in ways no one could have anticipated. In seventy-nine television episodes and six feature films, they grew to know each other more than most friends could ever imagine.

Over the course of half a century, Shatner and Nimoy saw each other through personal and professional highs and lows. In this powerfully emotional book, Shatner tells the story of a man who was his friend for five decades, recounting anecdotes and untold stories of their lives on and off set, as well as gathering stories from others who knew Nimoy well, to present a full picture of a rich life.

The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan

This is one I came across after Jen Campbell talked about it in her latest book haul video. It sounds like it’s one of those the-world-is-ending type books and I hope it’s good.

Set in a Scottish caravan park during a freak winter – it is snowing in Jerusalem, the Thames is overflowing, and an iceberg separated from the Fjords in Norway is expected to arrive off the coast of Scotland – The Sunlight Pilgrims tells the story of a small Scottish community living through what people have begun to think is the end of times. Bodies are found frozen in the street with their eyes open, midst economic collapse, schooling and health care are run primarily on a voluntary basis. Dylan, a refugee from panic-stricken London who is grieving for his mother and his grandmother, arrives in the caravan park in the middle of the night – to begin his life anew.

Under the lights of the aurora borealis, he is drawn to his neighbour Constance, a woman who is known for having two lovers, her eleven-year old daughter Stella, who is struggling to navigate changes in her own life, and elderly Barnacle, so crippled that he walks facing the earth. But as the temperature drops, daily life carries on: people get out of bed, they make a cup of tea, they fall in love, they complicate.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I requested Sleeping Giants on NetGalley – don’t know how I missed that one. Read another book by Mark Alpert and couldn’t put it down. May have to look into this one also.

  2. Nice list. It will be interesting to hear William Shatner’s take on Leonard Nimoy. They were on two different planes in terms of talent. Nimoy was a great director as well as an actor. Shatner is…Canadian.
