Hand Generated Gravity Quotes

One of the projects I did a few months ago was about creating posters based on quotes from movies. You were given a quote and had to create a piece of hand generated artwork featuring that quote which would then be put on a poster. I really enjoyed this project so I decided to make a few more pieces of artwork using quotes from Gravity. Here they are:

This is an A3 sheet of paper that I cut the type out of using a scalpel. I created the stars by poking holes in the paper using a needle (fun fact: poking yourself with a needle hurts way more than what you would expect). I then took a photo of the paper up against a window so the light would shine through.

This piece was created using the exact same sheet of paper. Except this time I shone a light through the type and took a photograph of the type projected against a wall. Someone who knows more about physics than I do will probably be able to explain why the light makes the type appear multiple times. I actually prefer this second version. I may add the movie title and see if I can turn it into a proper Gravity poster.

Exploring Media

This was one of my first projects at college and the aim was to get used to using various types of media while learning a little about colour theory. We did this by copying photos of urban glasgow using a specific media and in a specific colour combination.

This piece was done in a monochromatic colour scheme using soft pastel. For this we had to choose one specific colour (in my case blue) and then add black or white to create the different values. I think we had to do a little colour psychology in with this project too which is why I chose this specific colour.

I think this was my favourite piece out of the three. This was done using cut paper in a primary colour scheme. I’m actually kind of amazed I didn’t cut myself while doing this.

This piece was done as a lino print. So what you had to do was cut the design out of a piece of lino and then print it onto a piece of paper. We had to use a contrasting colour scheme for this which didn’t work out very well because both colours were very dark but I did another version of this using black ink which turned out really well.

If you like this sort of thing you should know I have posts about all of my college projects from the 2015/16 year coming in the next month. If you aren’t following me you probably should. Or something like that.

Portraits

Portraits | bluchickenninja.com

That is the first two weeks of college over and done with (wow that went by quick!). We started off the year by working on our drawing skills, to be more specific portraits.

Now here is the weird thing, I like drawing portraits, I’m not especially good at it but it’s something I enjoy doing (usually when I come across a selfie on Instagram that I like).  The thing is, I like doing portraits at home because I can take as long as I want to make sure everything is in proportion and looks right. But we don’t do that in college.

For the most part we are given a short amount of time (20 or 30 minutes) to do a portrait. Now I understand why we do that, the more portraits you draw the better you’re going to get at it. But that doesn’t mean I have to like drawing a portrait in 20 minutes. Maybe it’s the perfectionist in me but I would prefer taking as much time as I need to make them as good as I can be (and I’ll probably still not be happy with them but that’s a subject for another post!).

Paper Flowers

Being the broke unable to work 24-year-old that I am, I had very little money this year for a Mother’s Day present. Instead of buying something I decided to try making a bouquet of paper flowers. And I think it turned out pretty well.

I don’t know how many times I burned my fingers on hot glue but it was worth it. I think I’m going to try making paper roses next. Oh and I need to go buy some googley eyes. For important crafting purposes… not to just stick on every object I can find.

The Road Goes On

The Road Goes On | bluchickenninja.com

I still can’t decide if I really want to post this. There is a rather large mistake in it, that while not noticeable to most is really annoying me. It turns out the website that I used to check the lyrics were correct actually had wrong lyrics, which ended up in the quote being wrong, for the curious among you ‘flowing’ is supposed to be ‘rolling’. It’s not a huge deal but the perfectionist in me is annoyed.

But apart from that I am super happy with how this turned out. I love paper cut art but it’s something I’ve never tried before. The tiny shapes made it really difficult and I’m surprised I managed to finish this without cutting my hand on the x-acto knife. I have an idea for another piece like this so I may go back and redo this one too. Change some tiny details and fix that huge mistake.

Lyrics are from The Road Goes On from The Lord of the Rings Musical.
